The Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT) plays a critical role in diagnosing and treating sleep disorders by performing in-center and out-of-center sleep testing, as well as providing direct patient care and education.
Under the supervision of the Director of Sleep Services (or designee), the RPSGT will conduct sleep studies, monitor patients, and ensure high-quality results while overseeing other sleep center staff. This role requires proficiency in sleep technology and the ability to provide hands-on patient care.
Key Responsibilities:
Sleep Study Procedures:
- Conduct various sleep studies, including MSLT, MWT, PAP titrations, and parasomnia studies, ensuring accurate data collection.
- Perform physiological calibrations, adjust settings, and ensure artifact-free signals throughout the study.
- Record and document patient observations, including sleep stages, clinical events, and procedure changes.
- Administer therapeutic interventions as needed, such as positive airway pressure (PAP) and oxygen, ensuring patient safety.
- Score sleep/wake stages and clinical events (e.g., respiratory, cardiac events) using AASM standards.
- Generate accurate reports summarizing sleep data and clinical events.
- Provide age-appropriate care for patients across all age groups (neonatal to geriatric).
- Prepare and clean portable monitoring equipment, ensuring adherence to infection control standards.
Sleep Study Preparation & Set-Up:
- Collect patient history, assess physical and emotional status, and determine the appropriate testing parameters.
- Verify patient identity and consent for the study, ensuring all documentation is accurate.
- Orient patients to the procedure, explaining both in-center and out-of-center sleep testing.
- Calibrate and set up necessary equipment, applying electrodes and sensors as per accepted standards.
- Perform PAP interface fitting and desensitization as required.
Service Management & Professional Issues:
- Ensure compliance with safety regulations, infection control standards, and HIPAA policies.
- Perform routine maintenance on equipment and inventory.
- Maintain current BLS/CPR certification and keep up with continuing education (10 CEUs annually).
- Exhibit strong communication, customer service, and critical thinking skills, while working independently and as part of a team.
- Educate patients on sleep-related issues and procedures, following center-specific protocols.
- Review and evaluate sleep studies and provide feedback to staff.
- Assist in various operational tasks, collaborating with the medical director and/or sleep center leadership.
Additional Responsibilities:
- Follow all WellStar Health System policies, quality assurance procedures, and conduct standards.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support the overall function of the sleep center.
Required Education & Certification:
- Successful completion of an accredited educational program in sleep technology, or an Associate’s degree with a focus on sleep technology required.
- Current Sleep Disorders Specialist (SDS) or Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT) certification required.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
Preferred Additional Certification:
- Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) with Sleep Disorders Specialist (SDS) credential preferred.
Skills & Competencies:
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to troubleshoot equipment issues.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, patient-centered environment.
- Proficiency in sleep study scoring, data analysis, and report generation.
- Knowledge of sleep disorders, therapeutic interventions, and age-specific patient care.
