Job Summary:

The President & Chief Executive Officer (CEO) reports directly to the Board of Trustees of Wellstar Health System and will serve as the leader of the Executive Leadership Team.

The CEO will serve as the culture ambassador and leader within their organization.

Wellstar Health System has aspirational goals of achieving top decile performance in quality, customer experience, financial performance, growth, best places to work and community well-being. To achieve these goals and even greater success throughout the state and potentially regionally, the CEO must act  with a bias for action, and innovation and lead the system to be recognized at the state and national level as a top-tier performer. The President & CEO will serve as the face of Wellstar, as the brand ambassador in multiple venues nationally, throughout Georgia and in local communities. Interfacing with elected officials, business, civic and educational leaders, this leader must share the “amazing Wellstar Story” to ensure continued support for growth initiatives that will provide access to needed care across the state. This executive will need to balance the desire for growth with operational and financial performance while staying true to the mission and values of the organization.

Key Responsibilities:

The President & CEO has the responsibility and accountability for sustaining the vitality of the Mission, Vision and Values of Wellstar through the effective and efficient operation of the system. The President & CEO will be required to successfully lead the enterprise across a variety of key areas as follows:

Governance

  • Maintain effective relationships and partnerships with the Board of Trustees and other governing bodies.
  • Ensure adherence to Wellstar Bylaws and other governance documents.
  • Partner with Board members in multiple settings to meet the goals of Wellstar Health System.
  • Develop a communications strategy to ensure Board members are informed of Wellstar Health System’s planned and ongoing initiatives.
  • Meet as needed with community advisory boards.

Safety and Quality

  • Maintain focus on achieving the highest level of clinical quality and safety for patients by working closely with clinical leaders and staff.
  • Direct the development of sound plans, programs and reporting structures for quality management, risk management and utilization management. 
  • Pursue excellence in all clinical areas, with an emphasis on achieving certifications that connote the highest level of achievement (i.e., Baldrige, clinical specialty awards, etc.)

Strategy

  • Collaborate with the Board of Trustees to develop a strategic plan and regularly update and implement the strategic plan for the System.
  • Participate in Wellstar Health System’s strategic planning efforts with the members of the executive leadership team.
  • Strategically position the system at the forefront among healthcare providers statewide and regionally through the development of a strategic and operating plan that addresses identified needs and opportunities and integrates mission, business, and finance considerations. 
  • Shape the strategic and operational direction of the system in response to the evolving health needs of the communities served. Set clear expectations and commitments between governance and operations.
  • Continue to integrate, strengthen, and deploy the new assets and expertise of Wellstar MCG Health Medical Center.

Culture

  • Maintain effective relationships with the medical group leadership and members of the medical staff at large to build mutual confidence, respect, and trust.
  • Strategically direct and facilitate organizational communications, both internal and external, articulating the philosophy, mission, and values of Wellstar Health System to the communities served by the system. 
  • Promote a culture dedicated to patient-centered care, streamlined, and coordinated services and continuous process improvement.
  • Provide visible, inspirational leadership and build effective relationships both internally (Board members, medical group and staff, senior management, and all levels of team members) and externally (government, payors, community leaders, and other social/civic organizations).
  • Prioritize person-centered care including determining how to balance conflicting strategic and operational priorities, support value-based care and including diverse perspectives.

Financial Performance

  • Work with the Board and executive leadership team to identify revenue growth and waste reduction opportunities in the interest of continuously improving financial performance and sustainability.
  • Direct the preparation of the Wellstar Health System annual revenue and cost budget in coordination with the sponsors and oversee its execution throughout the year to achieve business objectives.
  • Work closely with the CFO to safeguard the assets of the organization, identify unusual trends, and keep the Board informed of significant events impacting the business operations performance of the organization.

Clinical Partnerships

  • Ensure strong and effective partnerships with clinicians to meet the mission, vision, and goals of Wellstar Health System.
  • Promote business arrangements (i.e., joint ventures) to meet clinical, patient care, growth, and business priorities.
  • Actively seek advice and support from clinical leaders, as they are an integral part of Wellstar’s success.
  • Continue to grow Wellstar Medical Group.

Innovation

  • Stay abreast of emerging trends in clinical and non-clinical technology to ensure that potentially additive technologies are properly evaluated.
  • Lead the CDIO and other expert team members to evaluate, acquire or build a distinctive patient experience, including scheduling, telemedicine, AI quality and productivity tools that improve both experience and patient loyalty.
  • Be a champion of innovation. Advocate for new ideas, technologies, and processes by challenging the status quo, aligning business goals and technology to move initiatives forward.

Growth

  • Drive controlled system growth to expand the patient the care services that Wellstar Health System can deliver to the community while preserving sufficient margin to ensure stability.
  • Continue to build and enhance clinical service integration, information sharing and transparency, and consistency in system-wide approaches that underpin a high-performance organization.
  • Continue to develop ambulatory care strategies, locations as well as care at home services to meet the growing need for patients to receive care at home and close to home.
  • Develop partnerships to meet growth needs to limit financial risk.
  • Seek opportunities for mergers and hospital acquisitions that align with the Wellstar Health System strategic plan.

Team Building

  • Retain, recruit and develop top-performing executives to serve on the CEO Cabinet.
  • Ensure that robust succession plans are in place for all key positions.
  • Create meaningful professional development opportunities for senior executives, clinicians, and staff at all levels.
  • Lead, guide, and direct the efforts of senior-level executives by delegating authority and accountability to executive - level leaders, by developing executive performance plans, by coaching ongoing executive performance and assessing appropriate rewards or consequences for executive performance outcomes by establishing effective two-way communication systems with executives and by developing performance improvement plans to correct executive performance deficiencies.

Partnerships & Brand Ambassadorship

  • Be viewed as a civic leader who is passionate about all the attributes of Georgia and Wellstar Health System.
  • Serve as an active and visible leader locally and throughout the state by serving on state and local boards, advisory councils, special task forces, professional societies, and commissions.
  • Maintain and develop effective partnerships with elected officials, government representatives, business, civic and community leaders throughout the state to be viewed as a leader in meeting the health and economic goals of communities throughout the state.
  • Meet with members of the hospital advisory boards to stay attuned to local needs.
  • Speak and promote Wellstar in various events and forums.

Required Minimum Education:

  • Masters Health Administration or Masters Business Administration/Management or Masters Medicine

Required Minimum Experience:

  • Minimum 15 years Executive healthcare leadership experience, with at least 7 years in a senior leadership role

Required Minimum Skills:

  • Proven track record in leading a complex, multi-hospital healthcare system. Expertise in financial management, operational efficiency, and strategic planning. Strong governance experience, including Board collaboration and stakeholder management. Exceptional communication and leadership skills with a commitment to servant leadership. High
