Core Responsibilities:
Specimen Receipt and Processing:
- Check all specimens for quality and quantity upon arrival.
- Cancel unacceptable specimens after notifying the RN and documenting in LIS.
- Centrifuge, decant, or split specimens as needed; deliver to testing areas in a timely manner.
- Prepare and aliquot 24-hour urine samples and input required data into LIS.
- Use tracking and pending logs to prepare specimens for transport to reference labs.
- Verify outpatient orders, physician orders, and home health orders for accuracy in HIS/LIS.
- Address insurance or billing issues with PAS or Outreach staff.
- Process microbiology specimens (plating, preparation, gram stains).
Phlebotomy:
- Prepare and maintain phlebotomy trays with necessary supplies.
- Perform venous and capillary blood collections, with a minimum of 10 venipunctures per hour.
- Review collection lists to minimize duplicate or unnecessary orders.
- Ensure patient identification using two identifiers before collection and report any missing or incorrect arm bands.
- Follow Blood Culture and Blood Bank specimen collection procedures.
- Confirm patients are left in a secure position after blood draws, and tourniquets are removed.
- Deliver specimens to the laboratory within specified timeframes and address any pending logs in LIS.
Customer Service Support:
- Follow AIDET standards at all times.
- Communicate courteously and effectively with patients, visitors, and hospital personnel.
- Maintain patient privacy and confidentiality.
- Handle incoming calls and resolve or route as needed.
- Address patient or provider complaints and escalate to a supervisor when necessary.
- Provide test results to patient care providers via reports, fax, or verbal communication.
- Maintain organized records for physician orders and lab reports.
- Follow up with patients or providers regarding problem specimens or recollections.
- Perform callback functions for critical or notification values.
Technical / HIS / LIS:
- Perform HIS/LIS order entry and resolve patient orders and sample issues using critical thinking and lab knowledge.
- Troubleshoot HIS/LIS, printer, and fax malfunctions.
- Organize specimen intake during downtime and assist with recovery.
- Assist with inventory control and maintain laboratory storage areas.
- Restock consumables in phlebotomy, clerical, and laboratory areas.
- Perform quality assurance checks on refrigerators and freezers.
Additional Responsibilities:
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Adhere to all Wellstar Health System policies, standards, and code of conduct.
Required Education:
- High School Diploma or GED required.
Required Licenses/Certifications:
- Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification required.
- Phlebotomy Technician Certification required.
Additional Certifications:
- Phlebotomy Certification by a national organization required.
Required Experience:
- Minimum of 2 years’ experience in phlebotomy and specimen processing in an outpatient or hospital laboratory environment.
