Job Summary:

The behavioral health consultant functions as a licensed clinician, providing assessments, new patient evaluations, and follow up treatments for patients presenting with various psychiatric and/or behavioral presentations. In this role, (s)he is primarily responsible for providing clinical care, in coordination with other members of the medical team.

Core Responsibilities and Essential Functions:

Evaluates new patients.
- Obtains clinical psychosocial history.
- Administers level 1 screening measures for depression, anxiety, and other clinical presentations as needed
- Collaborates with MDs/PHDs in provision of patient care
- Provides risk assessments and emergency visits when needed.
- Has knowledge of legal hold processes and is able to make appropriate clinical decisions based on patients current mental status.
- Refers patients to appropriate level of care. Care Coordination
- Determines needed treatment regimen
- Refers patients for follow up care when needed. Provides interventions to patients based on clinical needs
- Provides crisis counseling in areas of grief, loss, relationship issues, and acute stressors.
- Maintains on-going contact with patients/families who are active in treatment (phone calls, visits).
- Provides instruction in coping skills, stress management, grief, bereavement, etc.
- Assists patient in mobilizing support system. Completes documentation for all clinical encounters
- Assists patients in completion of short term and long term disability paperwork
- Documents clinical visits using progress notes and privileged communications for all patient encounters
- Documents prioritized quality and value metrics, as determined by the WellStar Medical Group and WMG Psychology/Psychiatry Coordinates Community Interfacing:
- Coordinates informational meetings and phone consultations with other mental health providers and facilities in the community for collaboration and continuity of care Provides community resources:
- Support group referrals
- Domestic violence resources
- Substance abuse and recovery resources
- Eating disorder education and referrals
- Student resources, disability services
- ECT service referrals

Required Minimum License(s) and Certification(s):
All certifications are required upon hire unless otherwise stated.

  • LCSW, LPC, LMFT in the state of GA
  • Basic Life Support or BLS - Instructor


Required Minimum Experience:

Minimum 3 years experience in a health related field, mental health, behavioral health, counseling or social services agency. Required

Required Minimum Skills:

Crisis Intervention, treatment evaluation, community collaboration, knowledge of treatment resources, knowledge of disability services, etc.
Possesses emotional maturity.
Demonstrates ability to work with patients with a life limiting illness.
Demonstrates ability to work as a member of an interdisciplinary team.
Possesses psychotherapy/counseling skills that can be applied to individuals, families, and groups.
Possesses knowledge of developmental characteristics (physical, psychosocial, intellectual) of people of all ages, economic backgrounds and cultural backgrounds.
Understands the documentation requirements of behavioral health providers to ensure protection of privileged communications shared in the context of psychological treatments. Demonstrate basic use of computer: Windows, Outlook and Microsoft Office.
