  • Job Summary:

  • The Certified Ophthalmic Assistant aids the ophthalmologist by obtaining medical information, performing preliminary eye function exams and explaining to patients about medication and/or procedures. Gathers history and information and performs comprehensive ophthalmic examinations or tests (such as visual acuity tests, the strength of glasses, color vision testing, lensometry, and tonometry, confrontal visual fields, Amsler grid testing, Keratometer, stereo acuity, BAT, EOM, fundal photography, HRT, refraction, applanator, Tono-Pen, etc.).


    Core Responsibilities and Essential Functions:


    Performs the following functions: visual acuity, tests such as visual fields, keratometry, ocular mobility, refraction, imaging, administers eye drops, assists with corrective lenses and another supplemental testing.
    Under the supervision of the ophthalmologist, administers medications, processes microbiological specimens, takes measurement of intraocular pressure and performs amblyopia treatment.
    Assists with ophthalmic surgery procedures. Administers eye drops and other medications per direction of the physician. Triages all patient calls. Provides assistance with laser preparation, assists with surgery by maintaining, processing and setting up instruments. Performs Humphrey Visual Field (HVF) and Goldman's Visual Field (GVF). Refills prescriptions. Arranges for ongoing monitoring.
    Performs imaging. Works with all subspecialties (retinal, glaucoma, cornea and others (EOG)). Educates lower level personnel/residents and provides ongoing mentoring as needed. Maintains equipment and reports malfunctions.
    Trains new staff as required.
    Performs other duties as assigned
    Complies with all Wellstar Health System policies, standards of work, and code of conduct.


    Required Minimum Education:

    • High School Diploma General or GED General

    Required Minimum License(s) and Certification(s):


    All certifications are required upon hire unless otherwise stated.
    • BLS-I - Basic Life Support - Instructor or BLS - Basic Life Support

    Additional License(s) and Certification(s):


    Required Minimum Experience:


    Certification as Ophthalmic Assistant. Required and
    COT vocational or technical training or degree preferred. Preferred and
    Minimum 1 year experience in an ophthalmology setting. Preferred
