PRIMARY CARE PSYCHOLOGIST

  • Position: Primary Care Psychologist
  • Initiative: Co-sponsored by the Behavioral Health Service Line (BHSL) and Medicine Service Line at WellStar Health System, aimed at integrating Behavioral Health Consultants (BHCs) into primary care practices.
  • Role & Responsibilities:
    • Provide clinical care in a primary care setting, offering brief (15-30 minute) cognitive and behavioral interventions.
    • Support Masters-level BHCs in two other primary care practices.
    • Supervise and train BHCs in evidence-based practices like motivational interviewing, mindfulness, and cognitive-behavioral techniques.
    • Work with Primary Care leaders to develop the Integrated Medicine practice.
    • Refer patients to community-based providers if more intensive care is needed.
    • 10% of time allocated to administrative responsibilities; the primary focus is on clinical care.
  • Objectives of WellStar’s Integrated Model:

    Improve access to treatment for patients with behavioral or psychiatric issues.

    Improve patient outcomes.

    Optimize office workflow and care coordination.

  • Compensation:
    • Competitive and tiered based on years of clinical experience.
    • Includes a base salary, annual quality bonus, and additional incentives for board certification in clinical health psychology.
  • Setting:
    • WellStar Health System: 11-hospital system, 5th most integrated in the U.S., and largest in Georgia.
    • Primary Care office affiliated with WellStar Medical Group.
  • Skills Required:
    • Flexibility and effectiveness in a fast-paced, multi-disciplinary primary care environment.
    • Crisis management skills and strong knowledge of behavioral health interventions.
    • Understanding of medical/psychological issues, psychotropic medications, and health-related problems.
    • Proficiency in using EPIC (EMR system).
    • Ability to provide clinical supervision and training for BHCs.
  • Required Education:

    Ph.D./Psy.D. in clinical or counseling psychology from an APA-accredited program.

    Completed APA-accredited internship in a medical setting.

    Training in Clinical Health Psychology with integrated primary care psychology rotations.

    Licensure or license-eligibility in Georgia.

    Board-certification in Clinical Health Psychology (preferred but not required at the time of hire, must obtain within 24 months).
