Assistant Vice President, Biomedical Engineering

Job Summary:


Function as primary administrative contact for executive leadership on Biomedical applications, systems, and technologies. Direct activities of the Biomedical Engineering Department in the selection, procurement, and delivery of biomedical equipment and services. Ensure all program elements are designed and implemented to comply with Joint Commission and other regulatory and inspection agency requirements, guidelines, and standards. Develop annual goals and objectives related to supporting the growth and development of the Biomedical Engineering Department in response to present and future needs. Develop and manages annual and strategic operating and capital budgets of the Biomedical Engineering Department and the biomedical facets of WellStar clinical cost centers.

Core Responsibilities and Essential Functions:


Human Resource Management. Manage and supervise Biomedical Engineering Managers at all facilities as they hire, train, supervise and evaluate employees timely basis. Assess and assist in the training needs of employees. Implement other WellStar Human Resources Policies and Procedures as necessary, including disciplinary action. Supervise and participate in in-service training of new technicians and clinical staff concerning use and operation of patient care equipment. Provide Biomedical Engineering resources to comply with the medical equipment management standards of The Joint Commission and other regulatory agencies. Policy and Procedures Oversight. Develop and implement consistent policies and procedures that guide and support functions of the Biomedical Engineering Department. Integrate management of biomedical equipment maintenance at all sites. Communicate with key clinical customers through participation on system committees and routine and rounding updates. Resource Management. Provide Biomedical Engineering resources to participate in the investigation and reporting of medical device related incidents. Provide Biomedical Engineering resources to participate in the medical device hazard and recall notification program. Provide Biomedical Engineering resources to manage medical equipment planning for construction projects involving biomedical equipment at all sites. Provide Biomedical Engineering resources to conduct pre-purchase evaluations, research vendors, assess cost of ownership, and other activities in support of biomedical equipment acquisitions. Provide Biomedical Engineering resources for initial inspections and acceptance testing for acquisition of biomedical equipment. Strategic and Operational Planning and Oversight. Develop a 5-year strategic and annual operating plan. Review and rank all strategic capital requests for biomedical equipment; assess and prioritize all strategic capital replacement. Align biomedical technology applications, technologies, and services supporting of strategic and operational initiatives. Develop a 5-year medical device and system technology plan with annual reviews for routine replacement and upgrades. Assess developing biomedical technologies for deployment within WellStar facilities. Strategic plan should be presented and reviewed by Executive and Senior Leadership annually. Budget Management. Provide budget recommendations for medical device and system parts, service agreement premiums and time material vendor PO’s. With the Biomedical Engineering Department Managers, review and approve purchase requisitions by Biomedical Engineering Department staff for medical device and system parts, service agreements and time material vendor PO’s. Biomedical System and Technology Management and Oversight. Analyze medical device and system service costs by clinical department, equipment class and model and other parameters, providing trend information to clinical and administrative leaders. Negotiate device, department, and facility or system-wide service agreements with vendors where appropriate. Provide management of equipment performance and service vendors to maintain the highest standards of patient care. When products or services are found to be unsatisfactory, expedite solutions, including replacing equipment or terminating service agreements. Employee Training and Development. Support through participation and promotion biomedical engineering and IT professional development opportunities and WellStar sponsored training for personal and staff development. Other assigned duties:

Required Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree is required.
  • Biomed engineering or other technical discipline is preferred

Additional Licenses and Certifications:

  • Certification as a Biomedical Engineering Technician or certifiable upon hire is required.
  • A+, Net+, CCNA or other IT certifications upon hire is preferred.

Required Minimum Experience:

  • Minimum 10 years in medical or technical equipment operations and maintenance management is required.
  • Minimum 5 years management of a hospital Biomedical Engineering program is required.
  • Multi-hospital system management experience is required.
  • Demonstrated leadership roles in cross disciplinary projects and activities within healthcare facilities is required.
  • Experience analyzing and negotiating manufacturer and vendor agreements for devices and service is required.
  • Significant experience in supporting networked medical devices and systems is required.

Required Minimum Skills:

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office software including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Capable of interpreting building architectural and systems drawings and information.
  • Able to compose and deliver presentations regarding medical devices and systems to clinical and administrative groups.
