Job Summary:

The Director of Accounting functions under the direction of the Wellstar Assistant Vice President of Accounting and is responsible for directing and managing the general accounting function for the system. The position is responsible for the month-end close, financial reporting and distribution, management of financial reporting systems, and management of GL staff. Requires a bachelor's degree in related area and at least 7 years of related experience in the field. Position relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Familiar with a variety of the field's concepts, practices, and procedures. Leads the work of others. A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected.

Core Responsibilities and Essential Functions:

Assist with the management/direction of general accounting functions/processes. * Responsible for successfully closing Wellstar Health Systems financial statements monthly * Create and ensure that the monthly close calendar is adhered to and that all close and compliance deadlines are met * Develop/Maintain departmental policies & procedures * Maintain and approve various Journal Entries prepared by team members Manage/supervise the general accounting staff * Responsible for interviewing, hiring, and training new employees. * Assign responsibilities giving consideration to skill/experience levels of staff. * Supervise staff in performance of their duties including annual performance evaluations. * Mentor/Coach and continue to train and develop to allow for better usage and efficiency of staff. * Assist with continuing education for staff through department meetings and special sessions. Maintain current GL System and maintenance. * Coordinate all upgrades and corresponding testing. * Work with I.T. on future conversions and all that it entails. * Review/Evaluate system processes to ensure efficiency. * Maintain additions/inactivation, etc. of the chart of accounts. * Maintain reports, as needed. * Oversee monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting Responsible for financial statement preparation and distribution. * Ensure adherence to GAAP. * Perform various balance sheet analyses. * Ensure Balance Sheet account reconciliation and maintain/review quarterly. * Coordinate the preparation of audit schedules for interim and year-end audit. * Prepare and review monthly financial statements to evaluate and report significant variances. Special Projects, as assigned. * Assist with special requests as they arise. * Assist with the Chart of Accounts maintenance * Acquisitions, accounting and reporting. Performs other duties as assigned Complies with all Wellstar Health System policies, standards of work, and code of conduct.

Required Minimum Education:

  • Bachelors Accounting or Bachelors Finance or Bachelors Other or Masters Business Administration/Management-Preferred

Required Minimum License(s) and Certification(s):

All certifications are required upon hire unless otherwise stated.

    Additional License(s) and Certification(s):

    Certified Public Accountant Preferred or Certified Management Accountant Preferred or Chartered Accountant Preferred

    Required Minimum Experience:

    Minimum 7 years directly related experience, preferably in healthcare Required and Minimum 3 years of leadership experience Required

    Required Minimum Skills:

    Expert level experience with Microsoft Office, Excel, and pivot tables Spreadsheet analysis, budget development, variance analysis, revenue enhancement, proforma, strategic planning, strong communication and presentation skills experience with Workday, Lawson, EPIC & Strata
