Overview


The Director, Lean System Consultant is an internal system-wide Lean Leader and member of the system's Lean Transformation Office (LTO), who will provide leadership to the development, implementation, and governance of Wellstar's Lean Program. This role is a Lean subject matter expert, driving system-wide adoption of problem solving and continuous process improvement through facilitation of cross-functional teams. This role will support leadership in deployment of system strategy and tactics, enhancing patient care, quality and safety, as well as key systems, towards sustainable, and quantifiable results, utilizing lean Wellstar's Lean Road Map as the primary strategy. This role is matrixed to the site lean staff for the purpose of supporting site staff development, augmentation of site capability, and is key for directing lean standards for overall system-wide governance of Wellstar's Lean Program.


This individual facilitates development and implementation of sites' strategic plans as a partner with system and site executive leadership teams in collaboration with the Lean Transformation Office. The role will support Executive Sponsors, Process Owners, Physician and Administrative Leaders, and Front-line staff. The role facilitates leadership to challenge status quo thinking and resolves conflicts within teams to ensure forward progress while breaking down barriers.

The Lean System Consultant provides system-wide training and coaching to develop Wellstar employees and leaders across all levels and functions of the system, including mentorship of the Director, Lean Site Consultant, Lean Site Consultants, Lean Site Facilitators, and Lean System Facilitators. This individual leads the knowledge transfer of Lean philosophy and methodology, including A3 thinking. This role is responsible for influencing change by advocating for excellence.

This position will report directly to the AVP, WellStar Lean Transformation Office

Responsibilities


Core Responsibilities and Essential Functions

  • Deployment of a system-wide process improvement strategy utilizing key Lean resources.
    * Under the direction of the AVP, deploy and maintain a standardized WellStar Lean Standard Work process improvement methodology across all facilities.
    * Develop and / or maintain checklists, roadmaps, standard work instructions, job aids and other tools to support the adoption of sustainable, repeatable and quantifiable process improvements.
    * Develop and maintain Performance Improvement training modules appropriate to all levels of the system.
    * Partner with local/site resources to ensure WellStar Lean Standard Work processes are followed and provide feedback and elevate concerns as appropriate to validate consistency.
  • Management system level system strategic Lean initiatives
    * Communicate regularly and effectively with executive sponsors, team leaders, process owners, and other stakeholders about team progress toward goal achievement, critical factors and obstacles.
    * Lead and facilitate improvement events and projects of a complex nature with minimal oversight, including assessment, planning, event facilitation and follow-up/sustaining outcomes. Meeting quality standards and the production of expected deliverables during all phases of the event and project life cycle.
    * Utilizes strong project management skills for each initiative including: developing clear project A3, proper scoping, timeline management, data collection, and pre-project communication plans. Keeps projects on track and key sponsors informed. Utilize escalation plans and countermeasures when project timelines or outcomes are at risk.
    * Collect and analyze Lean process data, identifying opportunities, developing solutions, implementing improvements and assist operational management to ensure sustainability.
    * Gather and track the return on investment
  • Teach, Mentor and Coach Lean concepts
    * Act as a change agent to instill process improvement culture throughout the organization. Communicates
    * Teach the Lean improvement mindset and concepts for all levels of the organization through classroom, workshop and project-based coaching.
    * Mentor and coach leadership teams in establishing and maintaining the strategic focus areas, action plans, dashboards, linked measurement system, and checking process to execute the work.
    * Partner with operations to develop, implement and sustain the WellStar management system model, thus supporting the organization’s goal deployment process.
    * Support the development of leader standard work for a linked checking system and a linked learning system that connects organizational priorities to the work at the front lines.
  • Provide continuity / connectivity between system level departments and initiatives.
    * Identify and facilitate cross functional improvement opportunities to leverage resources and learnings across the system. Such opportunities may include (but are not limited to) Quality and Safety, EHR implementation and optimization, Clinical Operations, Medical Staff, PI teams, Magnet designation and Baldrige.

  • Qualifications
    Required Minimum Education
  • Master's Degree Required and
  • Business, Operations, Engineering, or Healthcare Administration or Sciences Preferred

  • Required Minimum Experience
  • Minimum 12 years years of work experience, seven (7) years in healthcare.
    Required and
  • Minimum 8 years of experience in a dedicated continuous improvement role utilizing Lean methodology. Required and
  • Minimum 3 years in a direct management role.
    Required and
  • Proven experience influencing change at the executive level required while delivering results on strategic goals. Required and
  • Strong model of coaching and mentoring others in the concepts, methodologies, and tools of Lean. Required and
  • Lead complex, multi-site system-wide initiatives in healthcare organization(s). Required

  • Required Minimum Skills
  • Lean subject matter expertise (examples include: A3 Thinking, Strategy Deployment, X-Matrix, VSM, RIE, 3P, FMEA, Visual Management, Daily Huddles, 5S, Lean Management, Coaching and Mentoring, and Training.)
  • Strong demeanor and style to quickly establish credibility throughout any level in the organization.
  • Influence positive and sustainable change, within and across, various system-wide functional areas.
  • Ability to partner with operational system-wide leaders to accumulate, analyze, and concisely present data.
  • Formulate actionable plans that are prioritized most closely around key issues and that align with strategic initiatives.
  • Lean Management System, and Leader Coaching and Development.
  • Well organized, disciplined, and persistent. Driven to overcome complex barriers to achieve objectives.
  • Creative problem-solving, and the initiative to lead and effectively manage change.
  • Well versed in Microsoft 365 Products, data analysis, and project management.
