Job Summary:


The Director and Corporate Counsel provides legal advice and services to Wellstar Health System (WHS), including the Chief Executive Officer, Senior Leadership Team and Hospital/Division Presidents in accordance with federal and state law. The Director and Corporate Counsel is part of Wellstar Leadership and provides counsel for all of the business units of the system. This position reports directly to the Assistant Vice President and Assistant General Counsel of WHS responsible for employment law.
Legal advice and services may also include day-to-day employment related advice and counsel, support and management of litigation and agency matters from inception through resolution, interpreting laws and regulations impacting the organization and research key legal questions as needed, maintaining in-depth knowledge of federal, state, local employment laws and regulations, and reviewing and drafting of business and vendor related contracts.


Core Responsibilities and Essential Functions:


1. Provides assistance to the Wellstar Health System (WHS) legal department and takes responsibility for the administrative and/or legal affairs of the corporation as delegated by the Assistant Vice Present, Assistant General Counsel.
2. Provides legal advice and services for WHS and its affiliated companies to assure that the organizational structure, business transactions, and operational activities of WHS and its affiliated companies comply with applicable laws and regulations. Competency will be determined by direct observation.
3. Provides legal advice to WHS and its affiliated companies involving all employment matters and general healthcare matters, Competency will be determined by direct observation.
4. Oversees the delivery of legal services by outside counsel as retained by the General Counsel for WHS and its affiliated companies. Competency will be determined by direct observation.
5. Interprets and analyzes laws, regulations, case law, and government agency directives, and guidance, and opinions for WHS and affiliated companies. Competency will be determined by direct observation.
6. Provides community education upon request and education for WHS and affiliated companies employees and physicians on legal and regulatory developments in employment law and general health care. Competency will be determined by direct observation.
7. Collaborates with Paralegal(s), Contract Specialists and Administrative Support Staff. Competency will be determined by direct observation.
Performs other duties as assigned

Required Minimum Education:

  • Masters Law

Required Minimum License(s) and Certification(s):


All certifications are required upon hire unless otherwise stated.

    Additional License(s) and Certification(s):


    Must be a member in good standing with the Georgia State Bar Upon Hire Required


    Required Minimum Experience:


    Minimum 3 years Candidate must have demonstrated at least three (3) to five (5) years of legal experience, including at least three (3) years of significant employment law experience. Required and
    Experience in defense of employment litigation and employment agency-related matters, including preparation and review of pleadings, discovery, and motions, investigations, preparation of position statements, and conciliation efforts within a health care system, large corporation, and/or major law firm. Required and
    Experience with and knowledge of the unique issues of a large company with a diverse workforce. Preferred


    Required Minimum Skills:


    Must demonstrate effective leadership and management skills as well as excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to draft legal documents and correspondence and translate legal complexities into terms readily understood by senior leadership, management, and operations staff.
    Must be able to respond to inquiries from regulatory agencies, customers and business community while adhering to internal compliance policies and required state and federal regulations.
    Ability to provide legal advice in plain language and in a collaborative fashion.
    Working knowledge of Westlaw, Microsoft Office, and other legal support technologies.
